The Beatles: Rock Band

This is the third major release in the Rock Band series, the game has been, once again, developed by Harmonix, who were also behind the Guitar Hero series. Whereas Guitar Hero originally was played with just a guitar shaped controller to simulate playing the guitar, Rock Band featured a full band simulation. The Beatles: Rock Band, was timed to be released with the new remastered Beatles albums in September.

The game has 45 playable songs to master and can have up to six players, one on lead guitar, one on bass guitar, one on drums and up to three on vocals. On the guitar and bass guitar, players have to hold down the correct fret buttons and strum in time with the corresponding scrolling notes on screen, if they miss a note it will not play. On the Ludwig drum-kit, players have to hit the colour-coded drums in time with the scrolling corresponding colour on the screen, there is also a foot pedal for use, similar to a real drum-kit. If players continue to miss notes their meter rating will fall, if the meter becomes empty players will be forced out from that song. However, playing well and hit a certain note can activate “Beatlemania”, this is similar to “Star Power” in Guitar Hero and “Overdrive” in the previous versions of Rock Band, if one person activates Beatlemania, it can save another who has an almost empty meter.

Original members of the Beatles Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr as well as Yoko Ono have given approval for this game and have even had input to certain aspects of it also. George Martin, who produced nearly every major release by the Beatles, has passed the torch onto his son, Giles Martin who has produced for this game.

Four new peripherals have been designed for The Beatles: Rock Band to mirror those of the Beatles, these feature a Rickenbacker 325 guitar, a Gretsch Duo Jet guitar, a Hofner 500/1 bass guitar and a Ludwig drum-kit. These are backwards compatible with the other Rockband releases and similarly previous peripherals are compatible with this new title.

The Beatles: Rock Band is available on PS3, Xbox 360 and on the Wii.
